How to use the time to decimal calculator
- Choose Time → decimal to convert hours and minutes, or Decimal → time to convert back.
- Enter the values. Seconds are optional.
- Pick a rounding rule if your employer rounds time (for example to the nearest tenth or quarter hour).
How the calculation works
There are 60 minutes in an hour, so a number of minutes is that fraction of an hour: minutes ÷ 60. Seconds are seconds ÷ 3600. Adding them to the whole hours gives decimal hours. To go back, the whole number is the hours and the fractional part × 60 is the minutes.
Common timesheet rounding increments: 0.1 hour = 6 minutes and 0.25 hour = 15 minutes.

Formula
Worked examples
7 hours 45 minutes
45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 → 7.75 hours.
8.4 hours to hours and minutes
0.4 × 60 = 24 → 8 hours 24 minutes.
Timesheet with quarter-hour rounding
6 h 52 min = 6.8667 h, which rounds to 6.75 h (nearest 0.25).
Assumptions and limitations
- Rounding rules for paid time are set by employers and labor laws; this tool applies simple nearest-increment rounding.
- Repeating decimals (for example 20 min = 0.3333…) are shown rounded.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert minutes to decimal?
Divide the minutes by 60. 30 minutes = 0.5, 15 minutes = 0.25, 20 minutes ≈ 0.333.
What is 0.1 hours in minutes?
0.1 hours is 6 minutes, because 0.1 × 60 = 6. That is why many timesheets round to tenths of an hour: each tenth is a 6-minute block.
Why is 1.30 hours not 1 hour 30 minutes?
Decimal hours count tenths and hundredths of an hour. 1.30 hours is 1 hour 18 minutes; 1 hour 30 minutes is 1.5 hours.
